Finance Fundamentals: The Moola Money Card Game

What if learning about money felt less like a lecture and more like a game?

That’s the idea behind Finance Fundamentals, the Moola Money card game designed to make financial concepts more accessible, practical, and fun. Instead of learning through jargon or static guides, players engage with real-world money situations and talk through how they would respond.

At its heart, Finance Fundamentals is about building confidence: helping people understand financial concepts, apply them to everyday scenarios, and explain their thinking out loud.

What is Finance Fundamentals?

Finance Fundamentals is a discussion-based card game where players match financial concepts to real-life scenarios.

Each player holds a set of concept cards in their hand. These cards represent key financial ideas, tools, or strategies. During the game, players take turns drawing scenario cards and choosing the concept card they think best fits the situation.

The twist is that it’s not just about choosing a card — it’s about explaining your reasoning.

Players have to describe why they chose that concept and convince the group that it’s the best response. If the group agrees, they score a point.

Every three rounds, players also draw an action card, which adds an extra layer of unpredictability and fun.

How to Play

1. Start with concept cards

At the beginning of the game, each player is dealt a number of concept cards. These are the financial ideas they’ll be working with throughout the game.

These might relate to topics like saving, debt, investing, goal setting, or financial planning — themes that also sit at the core of the Moola platform.

2. Draw a scenario card

Players take turns drawing a scenario card. This card presents a situation, challenge, or financial decision point.

The scenario becomes the prompt for that round.

3. Choose your response

The player then picks one concept card from their hand that they believe best responds to the scenario.

This is where judgment comes in: there may be more than one reasonable answer, but players need to think through which concept is the strongest fit.

4. Explain your reasoning

After choosing a concept card, the player has to explain why they selected it.

This is one of the most important parts of the game. It encourages players not just to recognize financial concepts, but to apply them, interpret them, and talk about them clearly.

5. Agree on the best answer

The group then discusses the response and agrees on whether it’s the best answer. If it is, the player scores a point.

That means the game combines knowledge, communication, and a bit of persuasion.

6. Draw an action card every three rounds

Every three rounds, players draw an action card.

These cards shake things up and keep the game dynamic, adding variety and energy as play progresses.

Why We Created It

We created Finance Fundamentals because money can feel intimidating when it’s explained in abstract terms, but much more approachable when it’s social, interactive, and grounded in real situations.

That’s also why the game was featured in Entreprenista. As Linda Du, Co-Founder & CEO of Moola Money, put it:

“We’re taking a deliberately low-tech approach to growing a high-tech platform by creating a physical card game called Finance Fundamentals, which we’ll use with early supporters, test users, and at conferences. Having something tangible to play with makes financial concepts feel more accessible and engaging and will allow us to immerse people in our mission.”

That idea captures exactly what this game is meant to do: take concepts that can sometimes feel distant or overwhelming and make them tangible, shareable, and memorable.

Linda also shared this advice in the feature:

“Focus on creating tools, insights, or moments that people want to share.”

That’s the spirit behind Finance Fundamentals. We want financial learning to feel like something people genuinely want to engage with — and pass on.

How Finance Fundamentals Connects to Moola

Moola Money is building an AI-augmented financial planning platform that helps UK millennials and Gen Z users understand their financial situation, define their goals, and get more transparent, personalised guidance.

The card game reflects that same mission in a physical format. It introduces players to the kinds of concepts that matter in real financial life, from planning and prioritisation to understanding the different levers that can improve financial outcomes  .

In other words, it’s a playful entry point into a much bigger conversation about financial confidence.

How to Get the Game

Right now, the only way to get Finance Fundamentals is to become an early Moola user.

Here’s how:

  • Sign up for an account at app.moola-money.com

  • Test the product

  • Fill in a short feedback form afterwards

We’re gifting it to early supporters and test users, so if you want to get your hands on a deck, the best way is to try Moola and tell us what you think.

Final Thought

Finance doesn’t have to be dry, intimidating, or inaccessible.

With Finance Fundamentals, we’re making it more interactive, more social, and more human — one scenario, concept card, and conversation at a time.
